Baden-Württemberg is in the southwestern part of the country to the east of the Upper Rhine — but one which has some of its major cities straddling the banks of the Neckar River (Tübingen, Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Heidelberg, Mannheim). It is third largest in both area and population among the country's sixteen states.

For example, there are numerous larger cities and metropolitan areas in Baden-Württemberg that are worthwhile visits, such as Stuttgart (with its world-class opera house), Heidelberg, and Mannheim (the "Squared City" boasts one of Germany's most important theaters.)

In addition, visit the Black Forest, the Schwäbische Alb (located in the South - a rough landscape with limestone geology, featuring huge caves, deep blue lakes.), or Lake Constance (Bodensee), which is located at the border to Switzerland and Austria (Germany's largest lake.) Lake Constance is source of drinking water for millions and a haven for hikers, cyclists and sailors. Around its banks, you can discover Stone Age settlements, the “Flower Island” Mainau and the medieval peninsula of Lindau where the living Nobel Laureates of the world meet once a year.
