Castle Greifenstein and German Bell Museum
Categories: Family, Cultural, History, Dining
For Apartment Locations: Wetzlar, Waldgirmes
Greifenstein is a community in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis in Hesse, Germany. Its administrative seat is Beilstein. Greifenstein covers 67.43 km² on the eastern slope of the Westerwald range. Its name comes from the castle of the same name in the constituent community of the same name, where the German Bell Museum (Deutsches Glockenmuseum) is to be found, with about 50 bells showing the development of bell pouring. Visitors can actually listen to the sounds of those bells.
In addition, there are lots of other historic things to discover here: For example, an old medieval jail with torture tools, catacombs, and an old double church. You can actually use the stairs to go up the big towers, from where you can get a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Once you’re done with your visit enjoy a traditional German knight dinner in the castle restaurant (open daily between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.).

Visitor Feedback:

We particularly liked the German Bell museum since it is unique in that area. Besides a great 360 degree view there is a an old church, which was built there. The basement of the church is even older than the rest of the building (so this church has actually been built on an older church, which was there before.) There are also some catacombs, as well as some old towers that you can visit. It’s definitely a worthwhile family trip. Get a snack in their “Burgkeller” restaurant.
Where to stay during your visit:
We recommend staying at our Live Like a German vacation apartments in Wetzlar (distance is 25 km / 15 miles) or Waldgirmes (distance is 28 km / 16 miles.) From there Greifenstein is about 28 minutes driving distance.
