Free time in Füssen (Füssen vacation rentals | Füssen travel guide) and Surroundings:
Füssen lies embedded in beautiful landscape, surrounded by lakes and mountains, directly on the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. The historical old town of Füssen with its Italian flair invites you to go for a stroll and discover its beauty. Füssen with the “Hohes Schloss” is also called the “romantic soul of Bavaria.” The late Gothic castle complex used to be the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg (Augsburg vacation rentals | Augsburg travel guide). In the North wing, there are two museums, the State Gallery and the Town Painting Gallery. In the lord’s hall of the monastery, concerts are held during the entire year. Another sight to see is the “Museum of the City of Füssen” in the baroque Benedictine monastery Sankt Mang, directly at the Lech river.
If you want to visit Füssen, take a closer look at the Romantic Road. It is a very special drive with cultural atmosphere and lots of fun. The world-renowned vacation road starts in Würzburg (Würzburg vacation rentals | Würzburg travel guide) and connects well-known settlements such as Dinkelsbühl (Dinkelsbühl vacation rentals | Dinkelsbühl travel guide), Donauwörth (Donauwörth vacation rentals | Donauwörth travel guide), Augsburg and Landsberg am Lech (Landsberg am Lech vacation rentals | Landsberg am Lech travel guide). After 366 km, the journey ends in what is probably the most romantic part of Bavaria, in Füssen.
The best way to relax and enjoy the enchanting scenery is on a boat cruise on the Forggensee. From the 12 km long and 3 km wide lake, you have a fantastic view of the Alps with the imposing Säuling, and of course also of Schloss Neuschwanstein.
Ballooning
This way, you can see the Allgäu from above. You rise into the air and enjoy the breathtaking view of the magnificent lake landscape and the royal castles. And this is only one of the reasons why the Tegelberg is the best-known mountain “piste” to start flying. To be able to share the experience in the best possible way, balloon trips are being offered. It is even possible to cross the entire Alps in the hot air balloon – truly a special, unforgettable experience.
Schloss Neuschwanstein
The castle was built on orders of King Ludwig II. of Bavaria, in the middle of ragged rocks within scenic mountain landscape.
Neuschwanstein is the best-known of his castles and one of the best-known tourist attractions in the world. Every year, millions of visitors come to Schwangau (Schwangau vacation rentals | Schwangau travel guide) to see the unique architecture and interior of this “fairy tale castle.” In the immediate vicinity, you can also visit Castle Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau vacation rentals | Hohenschwangau travel guide), where the “fairy tale” king spent his childhood.
Crystal Spa Schwangau
In the Crystal Spa Schwangau you literally dive right into a different world. All pools, with direct view of the fairy tale castles, offer royal ambience. The landscape of the pools and saunas is decorated with 15 tons of precious and semi-precious stones such as amethyst, rose quartz and agate. In the outdoor pool with 12 percent saline water, which is unique in the Allgäu, you can float as you would in the Dead Sea while relaxing to soothing underwater music.
The seven saunas, two steam baths and one salt steam bath are sure to offer something for every fan of saunas.
Tegelbergbahn
On the Tegelberg mountain, you will find what is probably the most beautiful lookout into the fascinating world of the high Alpine mountains and their foothills. The Tegelbergbahn is a cable car of 2146 m length which can carry up to 470 passengers per hour to the top of the 1881 m high mountain. On the top, adjacent to the cable car station, there is a mountain restaurant, the “Tegelberghaus,” and the “Panorama Restaurant” of the top station.
The panorama terraces offer a unique view of the royal landscape. There is also an interesting sight at the bottom, though: 1934, an extensive Roman villa complex was discovered here, partially excavated and opened for visitors.
Hang Gliding/Paragliding
From the Tegelberg, excellent currents carry hang gliders or paragliders up to experience the Allgäu from the bird’s eye view. While being carried up in the air, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the magnificent lake landscape and the royal castles.
Wieskirche
The church of Wies, one of the best-known rokoko churches in the world, is located in Wies, close by Steingaden (Steingaden vacation rentals | Steingaden travel guide). When a farmer woman saw tears in the eyes of a Jesus there, the pilgrimages got started.
From 1745-1754, the pilgrimage church was erected to house the statue of the suffering Jesus. The magnificent house of God not only invites prayer and meditation, but also looks and amazement. In 1983, the church was added to the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.
The Festspielhaus
The Festspielhaus theater/concert hall is beautifully situated right on the edge of the Forggensee lake. Its magnificent mountain panorama and the unobstructed view of the royal castles is unique.
The house has gained a good reputation thanks to its high-class program of cultural events. It offers a manifold program with events such as concerts, musical performances, theater, comedies and guest appearances. The stage is one of the most modern and the second largest rotating stage in all of Germany.
The culinary delights are not to be taken lightly, either. In the restaurant with beer garden, you can find Bavarian gemütlichkeit with typical Bavarian delicacies, surrounded by a landscape right out of a tourist poster. The Romantic Restaurant offers fine, first-class cuisine. The Festspielhaus is the appropriate venue for various events such as galas, business events, fashion shows, Christmas celebrations, as well – you couldn’t wish for a more beautiful stage for a wedding, either.
Ticket reservation and information: Tuesday – Sunday, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.
