Gratuity in Germany

Gratuity in Germany
Tipping
[ source: Wikipedia ]

According to all the dictionaries, tips are something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service. What we experience however is the expectation of a tip, whether or not the service has been exemplary. In the United States we are used to tipping in restaurants and taxi cabs. We tip for personal services such as deliveries, doormen, massages, manicures and hairdressing. If we live in a large city we generally tip between 15 and 20 percent. In smaller towns 10 percent is often the norm but 15 percent is especially appreciated. However, when we travel, the rules change and if we are not aware of them, our experiences may be less satisfying and more expensive than you needed to pay. Generally, if you do some research before you go, you will find your travelling spirit more confident. >  [ + ] learn more

I've been speaking German (and English) with my American-born kids for almost 8 years now. In 2003, I turned my passion for German into my business, Alphabet Garten, offering German-language children's books to other like-minded parents. Along the way, I've spoken to thousands of customers, tried all kinds of things, hit a few bumps, and generally had a lot of fun. This lens is a collection of information I've gleaned over the years from raising my kids as well as talking to many other parents.>  [ + ] learn more

There is, perhaps, no other city in Germany that had been both the quintessence of the flourishing of Jewish German life, and its destruction. But the cities and the country are working with the kernel of the Jewish population to create a new era. Even though my family left the area in the 1890s and I have never had real ties to Germany, it felt like a completion to visit, freeing me to begin to enjoy the real charms of the country. Berlin is known to be quite an alternative city- it is after all the Mecca for electronic, techno and dance music. Because the locals have been suppressed in the years before the wall fell, it is only natural that they would be so incredibly open-minded people. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Oktoberfest, here’s a quick overview: Between September 18 and October 3 2010, all of the major names in the German beer scene set up massive tents filled with long tables and decorated in a traditional Bavarian style. In order to get a seat in a tent, it’s important that you buy tickets in advance. It is sometimes possible to get in without a ticket, if you’re very patient (or very pushy!) or generously tip the doorman, but it’s extremely hard to get through the crowds and into a beer tent without considerable advance planning.>  [ + ] learn more
