Abenberg Overview

Abenberg is a town in the district of Roth, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 9 km west of Roth bei Nürnberg (Roth bei Nürnberg vacation rentals | Roth bei Nürnberg travel guide) and 25 km southwest of Nuremberg (Nuremberg vacation rentals | Nuremberg travel guide).

More about the History of Abenberg

The county Abenberg arose among the Ottomans from 1002 to 1024, when the town was founded around 1040 by Wolfram von Abenberg. Burg Abenberg was bequeathed by its last owner to the city of Frankfurt (Frankfurt vacation rentals | Frankfurt travel guide) in 1959 but was not accepted. In the years 1982-84, the city bought the castle and restored it from scratch. Today the castle houses a medieval museum, a lace museum and a hotel with restaurant. The castle is also used for exhibitions, public and private events.
