Ahaus Overview

Ahaus is a municipality in the district of Borken (Borken vacation rentals | Borken travel guide) in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located near the border with the Netherlands, lying some 20 km south-east of Enschede.

The city is near the border with the Netherlands in the small river Ahauser Aa.

More about the History of Ahaus

The first German faience factory was founded in Ahaus and was then closed again in 1657. After brief membership of France from 1810 (at that time France had annexed the Principality of Salm), the city was 1813 under Prussian rule. The fire of 13 October 1863 destroyed the town almost completely.
