More about the History of Andechs
Andechs was the headquarters of Europe's major counts and dukes of Andechs Meranien starting in 1248. After a re-discovery of the fabled lost treasure relics of the Counts of Andechs in the year 1388, people made the pilgrimage to Andechs, once again increasing the city's notoriety. The Monastery of the Holy Mountain was founded in 1455. Until the secularization of the territory, it was part of Hofmark Erling. In 1850, the Andechs monastery was newly established as a sinecure for the abbey of St. Boniface by Ludwig I of Bavaria. The merger of Andechs to Erling, Frieding and Machtlfing took place in the reformation of 1978.
