The Axalp is an area of natural beauty with colorful variety, situated at an altitude of around 1500 m in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It is easily accessible by car or public transport. In summer, many hiking and mountain trails can be used. A Schnitzlerweg leads to the Hinterburgseeli: along the way there are many figures to see, all cut from tree trunks by wood carvers and sculptors from Brienz. Away from the hustle and bustle you can enjoy the beautiful view of the mountain ranges and relax. Many other attractions and recreational opportunities are to be found in the nearby region - for example, the open-air museum Ballenberg, Aare and Rosenlaui gorges, the steam-powered Brienz Rothorn Bahn train, Gelmerbahn (the steepest funicular railway in the world), Trift Bridge (the longest suspension bridge in Europe). Cruises on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. Pass trips such as to Grimsel, Susten. Prickling water and mountain streams. You can go sightseeing in cities like Thun, Bern, Lucerne and Zurich. Beautiful ski resort for skiing, snowboarding, carving. A destination and starting point for all kinds of vacation dreams. A special attraction is the “Fliegerschiessen” of the Swiss Air Force in October.

Unfortunately, we are not too familiar with Axalp. It is a cozy, truly rural, small alpine village and in winter it is a basic family ski resort where snow can usually be guaranteed. You'll find all you need to know on the website axalp.ch. It is also part of the Jungfrau region and near Interlaken where you'll find everything for your Swiss holidays. Unfortunately, I do not know the Axalp all that well. I’ve been there only once. One recommendation is the Schnitzlerweg: http://www.schnitzlerweg-axalp.ch/der-weg/ which leads to the Hinterburgseeli. The Giessbachfälle (water falls) by the lake are worth a visit as well. I do not, however, know any real insider’s tips. http://www.axalp.org/wandern.html http://www.axalp.org/wanderkarte.html In Brienz, of course, there is the Open-Air Museum Ballenberg which is always worth a visit. http://www.ballenberg.ch/ http://ballenberg.ch/en/Welcome http://www.swissmountainview.ch/ausflüge-schweiz/freilichtmuseum-ballenberg-brienz/ We ourselves hiked on Axalp – Schnitzlerweg – Hinterburgseeli in the summer of 2009 – some photographic impressions here: http://www.swissdoggies.ch/berner-oberland/axalp-juli-09/
