Travel Insider Tips for Baumholder
Baumholder was my the spot of my latest visit...what a charming old area. We were fortunate to be able to visit Briedel Germany, about 45 minutes away. It is the ancestral home for my father's family. The beauty is only surpassed by the congeniality of the locals.

More about the History of Baumholder
Baumholder was first mentioned in a document in 1156. The Principality of Lichtenberg belonged to Baumholder since 1816 as an enclave of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld. After the sale, it was the geographical center of the circle of St. Wendel, whose boundaries are the Protestant Church of St. Wendel.
In the 20th century the city was affected by the establishment of the army--the city became a garrison town. Several thousand residents were relocated. From 1941-1945, the Truppenübungsplatz was created, a prison camp for Soviet, Polish and others prisoners. After the Second World War, the US army stayed for a few years, while French soldiers were stationed in Baumholder.
