Today's community of Bissendorf was created by the merger of Samtgemeinde, Bissendorf-Holte and Schledehausen in the territorial reform in 1972. Bissendorf was first mentioned in writing in 1160. It developed initially in the area around the present-day St. Dionysius Catholic Church settlement, which currently has 2500 inhabitants.
The settlement around the church has survived and is now regarded as one of the finest examples of a church settlement. The church group is Meierhof, vicarage, old school and inn. The church settlement is a historical monument.
