Bogen Overview

Bogen is a town in the district of Straubing-Bogen in Bavaria, Germany. It has a population of 10,105. Bogen is located between the southern slopes of the Bavarian Forest and the Danube River.

The town lies on the foot of the Bogenberg, a hill directly placed by the Danube. The church of pilgrimage Mariä Himmelfahrt on the Bogenberg is the destination of one of the oldest pilgrimages for Mary in Bavaria (first mentioned 1103). Since 1958 the German army runs the Graf-Aswin-Kaserne in Bogen. The barracks, are home of pioneer forces and used for training medics.

More about the History of Bogen

Bogen was first noted in 1220. After the death of a significant city official, a sanctuary was erected in his memory. Into the 15th Century, the city expanded and attracted tourists traveling to see the sanctuary. In 1972, the city of Straubing-Bogen was terminated, allowing Bogen to be on its own.
