The Cloppenburg Museum Village and Lower Saxon Open-Air Museum is the oldest museum village in Germany. The museum is a research and educational establishment in the field of cultural and countryside history. On an area of about 49 acres, the msueum portrays the history of the rural life in the Lower Saxony region from the 16th century to the present. Over 50 historic buildings with their associated rural gardens and surrounding agricultural fields serve to illustrate the relationship of man to his environment over the course of time.

Cloppenburg was first mentioned in 1297, with a settlement built by the Counts of Tecklenburg in the immediate vicinity at the Krapendorf Soest-Losiny. Despite the geographical location between Hamburg and Osnabrück it still belongs to the diocese of Münster. In 1435, the Bishop of Munster awarded Cloppenburg its city rights.
Because of its conservative views, the city has a high birth rate, thus an always increasing population. The population of the city increased by 40% from 1987 to 2006 (22,266 to about 31,757).
