Cloppenburg Overview

Cloppenburg is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, capital of Cloppenburg District. It lies some 38 km south-south-west of Oldenburg (Oldenburg vacation rentals | Oldenburg travel guide) in the Weser-Ems region between Bremen (Bremen vacation rentals | Bremen travel guide) and the Dutch border. The town is a centre for the largely agricultural region of southern Oldenburg.

One of Cloppenburg's main tourist attractions is the Museumsdorf Cloppenburg, a recreation of a medieval village, featuring reconstructed buildings typical of the years 800 to 1800.

The Cloppenburg Museum Village and Lower Saxon Open-Air Museum is the oldest museum village in Germany. The museum is a research and educational establishment in the field of cultural and countryside history. On an area of about 49 acres, the msueum portrays the history of the rural life in the Lower Saxony region from the 16th century to the present. Over 50 historic buildings with their associated rural gardens and surrounding agricultural fields serve to illustrate the relationship of man to his environment over the course of time.

Hours: March - October: daily 9am - 6pm. November - February: daily 9am - 4:30pm.

Admission: Adults 6 €, Concessions 3 €.

More about the History of Cloppenburg

Cloppenburg was first mentioned in 1297, with a settlement built by the Counts of Tecklenburg (Tecklenburg vacation rentals | Tecklenburg travel guide) in the immediate vicinity at the Krapendorf Soest-Losiny. Despite the geographical location between Hamburg (Hamburg vacation rentals | Hamburg travel guide) and Osnabrück (Osnabrück vacation rentals | Osnabrück travel guide) it still belongs to the diocese of Münster (Münster vacation rentals | Münster travel guide). In 1435, the Bishop of Munster awarded Cloppenburg its city rights.

Because of its conservative views, the city has a high birth rate, thus an always increasing population. The population of the city increased by 40% from 1987 to 2006 (22,266 to about 31,757).
