"Hello, I am a Japanese grandmother who is going to be staying in Eisenberg for 1 month. My son-in-law will be working at hospital/research facility and I will go to help with my two grandchildren. I imagine that Eisenburg is a small town but does it have many supermarkets? What about cafes or restaurants? Are there any parks or similar places I can take my grandchildren to play? If we wanted to visit a larger city for more shopping, nightlife, would Frankfurt be easier than say Mannheim? My last question is that I noticed there are 2 cities/towns called Eisenburg, how can I avoid confusion when traveling?" (posted 06/19/2014)

Hello, Eisenberg in the Palatinate is a mid-sized city. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping markets, but I don't know if there is a park. You can safely travel with public transportation to different places. The city also lies close to the forest. If your son works in Mannheim, you should also consider Bad Durkheim. Here there is a large saline (salt air) pool in the beautiful park. In the park, there is a large playground and a water playground. Bad Durkheim is very centrally located with public transit connections every half hour into Mannheim. This would be a place of rest for you. There is a nice bar there, but as to real nightlife, I am not sure. Kind regards, Gudrun Ganss

Hello, Eisenberg is not that tiny. It has several supermarkets and other shops. I think there are also several playgrounds. Furthermore, there are several restaurants and a cafe on the market square. Nearby (Ha├čloch is about 40 - 50 km from Eisenberg), you can find a large amusement park "Holliday Park". Mannheim is about 50 km from Eisenberg and Frankfurt at least 100 km. However, you cannot compare the two cities, since Frankfurt is much greater. The second Eisenberg is, I think, in Thuringia and cannot be confused with this other Eisenberg. Hello, Eisenberg has at least a large supermarket and several smaller shopping and dining options. The nearest large town in the immediate surrounding area is Gruenstadt with many shops, restaurants and ice cream parlors, and a park. For something a bit wider and bigger, I would recommend Kaiserslautern and Mannheim. The correct term is Eisenberg / Pfalz, another Eisenberg is located in Thuringia, far away in eastern Germany.

Eisenberg / Palatinate is a small town with some smaller supermarkets and drugstores. There are several cafe and restaurants. The food ranges from local dishes to more elegant Italian cuisine. Interesting, especially for children, is Erdekaut - a nature park with a mining museum, playground & a few animals. Also nice is the nearby Eiswoog - comfortable to walk around with a playground, swimming & restaurant. About 15 km from the Hostel Altleiningen, there is a real castle with beautiful swimming pool, lots of facilities for & children, as well as a magnificent terrace & good food. But even in Eisenberg itself, there are some smaller parks & playgrounds, in addition to a beautiful swimming pool. If the Eisenberg supermarkets are insufficient, I would recommend the 2 larger markets in Gruenstadt, which also has a nice pedestrian area. Larger towns nearby are Kaiserslautern (30 km) and Mannheim (45 km), both offer entertainment for the evening. I cannot speak specifically to Frankfurt (70 km). The roads that way are heavily traveled, the parking situation is poor, and I don't know the nightlife. For shopping, my recommendation is Mannheim or Wiesbaden - a beautiful old spa town with many boutiques. It is tricky to input Eisenberg into a Navigation system. Be sure to add the word PFALZ - or the zip code 67304 - to help the device direct you.
