Endingen am Kaiserstuhl Overview

Endingen is a small wine town located on the northern edge of the Kaiserstuhl, well known as one of the largest wine and fruit growing areas of southwestern Baden-Württemberg. Favored by the very warm Mediterranean climate, the 3 town districts Amoltern, Kiechlinsbergen and Königschaffhausen form one of the largest wine-growing communities, producing almost one third of all Baden Wines.

The state-approved health resort Endingen has a charming historic old town with romantic corners, gates and fountains and is surrounded by nature, vineyards, forests and rolling mountains and hills. Every free piece of land is planted with vines in the Kaiserstuhl region and Endingen is no exception. Besides some local independent wine growers, the Kaiserstuhl region is also home to Europe's most important wine cellars, the Baden Wine Cooperative. The highest elevation of the Kaiserstuhl volcanic massif is 1,828 ft. The river Rhine, forming the boarder to France, is to the west, Switzerland to the south and the Black Forest to the northeast, making Endingen even more attractive to international visitors.

Visitors are invited to explore the surrounding vineyards and to take part in regular wine tasting events. The highest point of the Endingen district is Mount St. Catherine, with a small chapel. A historic railway orbits around the diversified landscape of the small volcanic mountain Kaiserstuhl and connects villages and towns. The observation tower Eichelspitztrum in Eichstetten offers a magnificent view of the Kaiserstuhl.

Endingen is also a good location for day trips to the Black Forest and historic towns such as Breisach on the Rhine. In the triangle of the three countries Germany, France and Switzerland lies Basel, and if you like to visit the lovely region of Alsace in France, the city of Strasbourg is also in easy reach from Endingen.

More about the History of Endingen am Kaiserstuhl

Endingen is first mentioned in 862. It belonged for several centuries in the possession of the lords of Endingen until it reached the Lords of Üsenberg, transferred to Endingen from 1285 to 1286 under the town lease. After 1379, the Üsenberger came to town, with Austria assigned to leading. In the beginning of the 15th century, the status of free imperial city. the last of the witch trials took place.
