Finsterwalde Overview

Finsterwalde is a town in the Elbe-Elster district, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated on the Schackebach, a tributary of the Kleine Elster, 28 m. W.S.W of Cottbus (Cottbus vacation rentals | Cottbus travel guide) by rail.

The city is located in Lower Lusatia, a landscape that is mostly in the south of Brandenburg lies. Finsterwalde is 112 km south of Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide), 78 km north of Dresden (Dresden vacation rentals | Dresden travel guide), 53 km southwest of Cottbus and 109 km northeast of Leipzig (Leipzig vacation rentals | Leipzig travel guide).

Things to See in Finsterwalde

County Museum Finsterwalde-the core is an original grocery store but now the museum offers an insight hereby authentically furnished in a "corner shops" of the 20th Century. Was opened in 1981. Some furniture sales still come from the foundation, the interior, the product packaging and advertising convey a vivid impression of the sales culture in the period after the First World War.

The station Finsterwalde was in the course of Streckenbaus by the Hall-Sorau-Gubener railway built and is now a stopping point of the electrified railway Halle-Cottbus. The nearest main street is the B 96 (Sassnitz - Zittau). The junctions Bronkow Großräschen and the A 13 (Berlin - Dresden) are 17 km and 18 km far away.

The first written mention was made in 1282 under the name Vynsterwalde. Since the late Middle Ages developed various industries in the city. The general industrial boom in the 19th Century contributed to Finsterwalde's enormous growth. It was the turn of linen, the economic development of the city lasting influence.

The population Finsterwalder rose from 1,600 in 1800 to 10,726 in 1900. The city extended over the now out of the medieval settlement. Newly created residential and small business run like a belt around the original core of the city.
