"Is tobacco still grown in Frastanz/Fellengatter? If not, how long ago did this industry disappear? Was there a processing factory in Frastanz or Fellengatter, or only fields and drying sheds? What sort of tobacco was it? Thanks!" (posted 08/14/2016)

Today is grown in Vorarlberg in Frastanz except the municipal office no Tabac. The small memory box with about 100 Tabacpflanzen is only a reminder of the time of approx 1750 - planted as extra income of the farmers Tabac 1850 in Frastanz and around Tabac and kept dried. This Tabac said to have been of the highest quality and a major financial source of income for farmers. Mainly he was sold to Germany. I hope you my knowledge serve you. That's all I've found on tobacco in Frastanz: Up into the 19th century Frastanz was a rural-oriented community, from the annual apprentices looking for work to neighboring countries, particularly in Switzerland, southern Germany and departed to Alsace. It was probably those seasonal workers who brought the first tobacco plants from Alsace to Frastanz at the end of the 17th century. Tobacco growing, which was to be found except in the Nenzinger neighboring parcels moths and Mariex not in any other community in Vorarlberg, was soon become a major source of income in Frastanz. While still in 1811 in the village of 290 quintals of tobacco were harvested, placed in 1828 the introduction of the tobacco monopoly by the Austrian authorities the further cultivation to an abrupt end. Only once more, in the revolutionary year of 1848, flickered on the resistance of Frastanzer peasants against the regimentation from above. The customs officers who wanted to control the tobacco were sold by a mob unceremoniously from the village. Increased quartering of military troops in Frastanz was the government response to the unrest. For tourism purposes is still grown: The compiled exhibition of precious and rare Smokerama in Frastanzer Hall reminded impressively to the once great tradition and importance of tobacco production in Frastanz. The Town Hall is home to a Frastanzer gathered from households Frastanzer collection of pipes, snuff boxes and other smoking paraphernalia. The exhibition is complemented with a loan of more than 150 exhibits of the former Austrian Tobacco Museum. In addition to tobacco paraphernalia at City Hall the exhibition during the summer months provides an attraction in the municipal park: There is tobacco annually planted to show a piece of living history Frastanzer. Guided tours on request can be agreed by the tobacco issue.
