    Up from the Ground

Up from the Ground was an extreme metal festival held annually in August in Gemünden am Main/Steinwiesen, Germany from 2000. The 2007 edition took place on August 24-August 25 and was the last edition of the festival. There was no festival in 2008, and the event's future is very much in doubt owing to the promoters' fears arising from, among other things, what they consider to be a poor location.

Travel Insider Tips for Gemünden (Westerwald)

Gemünden Overview

Gemünden lies east of Westerburg in a valley, shielded by mountains to the North and East but wide open to the South. In the town the three brooks Holzbach, Elbbach and Schafbach flow together. In 1972 it was integrated into the then newly founded Verbandsgemeinde of Westerburg, a kind of collective municipality.

Gemünden is surrounded by Winnen in the North, Westerburg in the Northwest, Willmenrod and Berzhahn in the Southwest, Langendernbach in the Southeast and Seck and Irmtraut in the East. The closest bigger cities are Limburg in the South and Montabaur (Montabaur vacation rentals | Montabaur travel guide) in the North.

The protection of the mountains and forests around the town and the sparse population of only a few more than 1000 citizens, have very positive effects on the climate. The weather is surprisingly mild all year round and the air is uncommonly clean.

Things to See in Gemünden:

A definite highlight of this area is the so—called Sonnenkanzel, which was opened in 2010. It is a platform from where you have a spectacular view over Gemünden and the whole Westerwald. It is especially lovely in the spring and summer, when you can hike up there on a sunny day and enjoy a picnic on the top.

The biggest and at the same time most significant building in Gemünden is the Protestant church St. Severus, which was built around 1100 AD and today still displays fragments of Romanesque paintings from this time period.

Things to Do in Gemünden:

The Wiesensee, a beautiful lake, is only a bit more than one mile outside Gemünden. Here you can go fishing and swimming in the summer or just lie down in the warm grass on the shore and take a sunbath. There is also an 18—hole golf course right by the lake. Other popular sports in the area are hiking, biking and inline skating. Cultural Events:

Every second weekend after Whitsun the whole town comes together to celebrate the kermis festival. Additionally, on the 30th of March every year there is a Dance into the May party held in the local fire station.

More about the History of Gemünden (Westerwald)

Gemünden was first mentioned in a historic document in 879AD, when a monastery was built at this location. The monastery owned great estates and was quite powerful for centuries, until the estate was damaged in a fire sometime between the years 1430 and 1440. In the following years the monastery lost its wealth and independence step by step, until the Reformation was introduced in Gemünden in 1566 and the monastery finally closed down only a few decades later.

A Romantic poet could not have imagined the location and appearance of Gemünden in the West of Germany any better. This lovely small town in the Westerwald lies in a valley surrounded by impressive mountains in the North and East and is wide open towards the South. In the town itself three rivers — the Holzbach, Elbbach and Schafbach — flow together. The protection of the mountains and forests around and the sparse population of only a few more than 1000 citizens, have very positive effects on the climate. The weather is surprisingly mild all year round and the air is uncommonly clean.
