Grafenau is a historic town located in the Freyung-Grafenau district of Lower Bavaria. It is considered the oldest town in the Bavarian forest. Grafenau is the seat of the Bavarian Forest National Park Authority.
Grafenau is considered the oldest town in the Bavarian forest. The town lies in the Bavarian Forest at a height between 600 and 700 meters over sea level, right beside the Bavarian Forest National Park. The Kleine Ohe is the river that flows along the east and south of the town. It flows since 1976 into an artificial lake which is used for sport and recreation in the town.

More about the History of Grafenau
Grafenau was a major trade route along the salt and gold lines beginning in the 13th century. The first town hall was built in 1521. On 3 February 1946 had the first municipal elections after the Second World War. Since 1965 Grafenau is a nationally renowned health resort. The merger of the two Altlandkreise Grafenau and Wolfenstein into Freyung-Grafenau was created with administrative headquarters located in Freyung.
