Town Hall and Market Square

The three-story town hall was built in 1462 in Late-Gothic style and serves as the town’s administration building. Up until last century it was used for a variety of purposes: school, fire department storage room, local police station, home of the town servant and night-watchman, prison.

The rectangular market square was designed in its current layout after the great fire of 1870. Previously, the gables of all houses were facing the market place. The houses were all half-timbered and had shingle roofs. The St. Mary’s Column in front of the Town hall was erected in 1922 to honor the soldiers killed in World War I. A plaque was added to commemorate the victims of the bombing attacks on April 5 and 8, 1945. The Plague Column on the Market was erected in 1496. It can be assumed that it was erected by the survivors of the plaque as a sign of gratitude.
