More about the History of Groemitz

Grömitz is one of the oldest seaside resort on the Baltic. The place name Grömitz evolved from the name of a creek. the fortress was moved to Oldenburg in Holstein. Unlike Grömitz still remains this rampart to be admired. Oldenburg in an existing museum gives an overview of the former importance.

Little known is the fact that Grömitz had already in 1400 a sea-going port and a brisk trade led to the Travelodge located ports. Lübeck, Travemünde, Oldesloe and Danish towns were among the main trading centers Grömitzer ships. Was favored by natural harbor of the sandbanks as the Walkyriengrund. The foreign trade port lost its importance as it in the 17th Century petered out. Mid-1960s, was built in a modern marina which is one of the largest and most important of the Baltic Sea marinas.
