"I will be working in Hermsdorf in July and August and was wondering if there are any places there for young people to hang out like some bars, or clubs? I found one place called Jugendhaus that seemed interesting so if you could tell me more about that. Thanks!" (posted 05/08/2014)

Hermsdorf is a small town with about 10000 inhabitants. I personally have not discovered its nightlife, but I could imagine that it's nothing to a young person. Only 25 km away and easy to reach by (hourly) train, however, is Jena, which will certainly deliver. Its 25000 students make for a strong nightlife with clubs, bars, and events of all kinds.

At the moment, we also don't know much but we'll ask some friends and send a follow-up reply. However, Jena is close by and easily reached by bus or train (in half an hour). Jena is home to a few thousand students and, accordingly, has much to offer for young people.

Some comments re. Hermsdorf / Thuringia: You should know that the small town Hermsdorf (see also: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermsdorf_ (Thuringia)) is just a 'sleeper town' with some industry and a well-known research institute (Fraunhofer Institute ). The city itself has only about 8,300 inhabitants. However, the environment is very beautiful, with nature and the forest. For culture and entertainment, the city of Jena is more appropriate. Jena has about 100,000 inhabitants, of whom about 26,000 are students. In Jena, where I myself live (and also rent out a guest apartment ), about 12 miles), there is a lot of culture and entertainment: theater, restaurants + pubs, in the summer a large open-air festival and many concerts, music and dance events . Distance between Jena and Hemsdorf is about 20 km (about 12 miles) and you can very quickly get there by car or train. Should you have any further questions, please let me know. Regards Dieter Siegel

We are from Jena. That's near Hermsdorf - approximately 30 km from Hermsdorf. Because Hermsdorf is a small town with 8.000 inhabitants, there are not so many restaurants and posibilities to spend your leisure time. But Jena and Gera are not far away - there are a lot of posibilities to spend your time. Jena, in particular, is a university town with a lot of small restaurants and bars. The Jena Kulturarena (June 20 to August 24, 2014) is well known in Germany. You can go to the festival or sit down in the area around the festival with other people and chat and have fun. It´s a really nice atmospere. Our holiday flat is not available all the time in July and August. But if you are interested in staying here at the time when it is possible, we will show you Jena or tell you about interesting places, bars, clubs and restaurants. And of course we will make you a special price. Best regards Sigrid and Frank from Jena

Hermsdorf is a small town with several restaurants and an active youth center, where a variety of events for young people of different age take place. There are regular and recurring activities as well as 3 to 4 live events with bands in the house or in the area. So worth a look, but I cannot say what is taking place at the time. But since it's the holiday season in Thuringia, there should be more events there. There is a cafe, TV - and billiards room, table football, card games, possibility to play football. Furthermore, a garden with barbecue area, pond, playground and lawn is available. I hope this little insight helps; I do not have further information.
