Definitely worth seeing are the seal colonies at Hoernum, which can be approached by boat. Furthermore, the boat trip to Helgoland is very interesting to Helgoland, and trips to the islands Amrum and Foehr are fun. Best regards from Hannover, Hugo Weinberg

On the southern tip of the island, two seas collide and wash over the wide sandy beach. And the lighthouse always shows walkers and sightseeing boats the right way: Hoernum is Sylt's sunny south. Hoernum If you look from high above from the lighthouse tower toward the south, then you will see golden yellow: beaches as far as the eye can see. Whether you seek challenging waves on the west side, or want to dabble with your small pirate on the gently sloping Oststrand - you'll be happy with both. And regardless of which beach side you choose, if you run south, you will stand on the windswept Odde, where the power of the tides is more clearly than anywhere else on the island. Unpredictable sea breezes also blow across the award-winning 18-hole links course at the foot of the Budersand dunes, requiring of experienced golfers the highest concentration. Back in the harbor, the sails of the catamarans tsyylr in the wind and sailing boats clash together their picturesque white masts. On a trip on one of the excursion boats, you can view this maritime panorama from the sea, while you're out on a day trip to the neighboring islands. But be back by sunset: In the vastness of the dunes, Hörnumer is an unforgetable red-gold spectacle.

More about the History of Hörnum

Although fishermen had reportedly settled in the area prior to 1500 AD, the place is first recorded in 1649 as Hornum. The name "Hörnum" was already known to the chronicler Muchel-Madis (* 11 November 1572 in Morsum; † 21 January 1651), who in his chronicles reports a shipwrecking "1571... off Hörnum". In 1648, the area was named "Hörnum" on a map by cartographer Johannes Mejer (1606–1674). The southern tip of the island remained unsettled though for a long time, because not only storm surges but also shifting dunes, which would repeatedly bury houses, made a colonisation difficult. Only in the late 18th century, this effect could be stopped by planting vegetation on the dunes. "On Hörnum", as the entire southern peninsula of Sylt used to be called, there were at first only a few fishermen. A single house stood in the dunes at Budersand from 1765 to 1785. It served for storing flotsam, but was soon torn down by people from Amrum and Rantum. In 1787, only the foundations were left.
