Hohnstein and its surroundings are always worth a visit for hikers, climbers, and cyclists. The city Hohnstein is a castle town on a rock with a beautiful castle. Excursions to the Brand, also called the Saxon Switzerland’s balcony, are possible. Hikes to the Hockstein, Waitzdorfer Höhe in the Schwarzbach valley or Polenz valley are very popular.

Hohnstein Castle first mentioned in 1353, on a rock steeply descending into the Polenztal, former seat of the feudal government Hohnstein from the 14th century, served as a border fortress and robber barons’ castle, an electoral hunting lodge, administrative headquarters, court, state prison, concentration camp, prisoner of war camp, hostel. Now it is a tourist attraction and youth hostel, worth seeing: castle building and courtyard (15th/16th century.), Bear Garden, torture chamber, memorial. Hohnstein Castle (German: Burg Hohnstein) is a medieval castle in the village of the same name, Hohnstein in Saxon Switzerland in the Free State of Sachsen in East Germany.

The castle is enthroned on a sandstone rock high above the Polenz valley and is the emblem of the small town. It lies on a hard sandstone slab, 140 metres over the Polenz valley.

Access to the castle is only possible from the market square (Marktplatz) in Hohnstein. Of the once numerous castles east of the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland, Hohnstein is the only one that has survived intact.
