Laer is located in the green landscape of the Münsterland, which is characterized by numerous beautiful moated castles. Most of these castles and palaces can be reached via beautiful bike trails. About 7 km from Laer is the moated castle Burg Steinfurt of the Princes of Bentheim and Steinfurt, and it is located in a large park, the Bagno. In Bagno is Europe's only free-standing concert hall dating from the 18th century, which has been fully renovated and is now used for concerts by world-famous artists. Just half an hour's drive from Laer (24 km) is the university city of Münster city with the beautiful, historic city center, which was rebuilt after almost total destruction in World War II. St. Paul's Cathedral, the Castle, the Erbdrostenhof by the famous architect Schlaun, and the Picasso Museum are the special attractions of the "most livable city in the world", an honor which Muenster has twice received.
