More about the History of Lichtenfels (Bavaria)

Lichtenfels was first mentioned in 1142, and has since earned its city status in 1231. The city was designed by Otto II, Duke of Meranien. After the lapse of Meranien in the year 1248, the city fell to the high king Bamberg. Lichtenfels underwent secularisation in 1802 under the Electorate and later Kingdom of Bavaria.

In the 14th century the historical part of the town was surrounded by a curtain wall with three gate towers. The Bamberg Gate and the Kronach Gate are still preserved today. Of the originally five defence towers there is still left the "Red Tower". At the marketplace lies the ancient town hall. And high above the rooftops of the historical town rises the town castle of Lichtenfels. The tourist guide "A sightseeing tour through Lichtenfels" is available at the Tourist-Information at the marketplace.
