Lichtenwalde Castle and Park

Lichtenwalde Castle and Park

Lichtenwalde is so very different from other Saxon castles because it is surrounded by a network of fountains. One hundred of these fountain complexes are situated throughout the Baroque garden with more than 400 individual fountains connected by an intricate circulating system. Visitors can experience a symphony of rustling leaves, splashing water and the sweet scent of flowers in the spring. It was not without good reason that Lichtenwalde was chosen as one of Germany‘s most beautiful parks.

Approaching the castle from the park‘s avenue, one is left almost speechless by the impressive layout of this peaceful green paradise. While aptly illustrating the transition from Baroque to Rococo, the terraced park however never completely reveals itself to the visitor‘s eyes which are time and again directed to playful details such as antique amphoras, statues and circular flower beds and from the artificial garden itself to the real nature in the Zschopau valley below which is now a natural preserve. The castle itself houses several ethnological collections which focus on the topic of Encounters of Cultures featuring the civilizations of Asia and Africa. There is also a silhouette museum with filigree two-dimensional valuables which visitors should definitely not miss out on – it is one of only a few of its kind in Germany.

Hours: Castle: Apr – Oct: Tue-Sun 10am-6:30pm, Nov – Mar: Tue-Sun 10am-5pm. Park: Apr – Oct: daily 9am-6:30pm.

Admission: Adults 3.50 €, Concessions 1.30 €.
