Mittenwald Overview

The typical Bavarian, picturesque climatic spa town Mittenwald is located about 3000 ft above sea level, in the alpine world of the Karvendel Mountain range in the Niederwerdenfelser Land, near the Austrian border. On the west of the town are the two mountain lakes Lautersee and Ferchensee and the mountain range Wettersteingebirge. The river Isar, with the majestic backdrop of the Karvendel, flows east along the traffic-calmed Mittenwalder town center, inviting you to discover beautiful fresco decorated houses, elegant shops and cafes.

Mittenwald with its trade route to Italy was throughout history the gateway to the south. In only 3 hours one can be by the sea! Innsbruck Airport is only 24 miles away and the International Airport Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) only 77 miles. For more than 300 years Mittenwald has been famous for manufacturing string instruments, and music lovers should be sure to visit the Geigenbaumuseum (Museum of violin-making). During the warmer months get to know the variety of offers for walking and hiking in and around Mittenwald, and when the snow falls indulge in the many winter sport activities such as alpine and cross-country skiing, snow boarding, tobogganing, ice sports and horse sleigh rides. The Karwendel cable car and the Kranzberg-chair lift bring you to the lofty heights of the mountains. A special adventure not to be missed in any season is the hike in the famous Leutasch gorge.

[Mittenwald] Me too. I love the old towns with the pedestrian zones. Take the subway to the city and then walk around or sit outside a cafe shop drinking cappuccino and eating Kaesekuchen.

My son and I took the cable car ride in late July. There was about a foot of snow on the ground. We had a wonderful time hiking around! My profile picture is from that trip.

More about the History of Mittenwald

Its location as an important transit centre on a relatively low (and therefore predicable) transalpine route has been a defining feature of Mittenwald for at least two thousand years: during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries traffic was boosted by large treasure trains sent regularly from Spain to pay troops in the Netherlands, the more conventional sea route having been rendered unreliable by the (usually) discrete but effective sympathy with which the English Protestant establishment favoured the Spanish king's rebellious Dutch subjects.
