The area around Rheinsberg was settled very early. Settlements were on the island of Remus in Rheinsberg lake. Rheinsberg is inextricably linked to the castle and the rulers of the sex Hohenzollernstra├če. Since the acquisition by the Rhine Berg Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I and after the fire in the city in 1740, the city and castle (originally a Renaissance building from 1566) were rebuilt by the architects Johann Gottfried Kemmeter and Georg von Knobelsdorff Wenzeslaus rebuilt. In the local Crown Chapel had Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach as Kammercembalist from Frederick II through the expansion of the castle of Rheinsberg.
