On 1 December 1971 Großachsenheim was amalgamated along with the other cities. In light of the upcoming amalgamation, officials decided to change the name to Sachsenheim. On 1 January 1973, the name change was made official after the incorporation of Hohenhaslach, Ochsenbach, Spielberg and Häfnerhaslach.
