Where can one get a great breakfast in the morning?

Are there any cultural highlights, museums?

Ideas for 2-3 activities and daytrips?

Good restaurants for dinner?

Typical tourist activities or places that one should NOT do, as they are not worthwhile doing.

Things can do to make it a fun and memorable evening?

How to get around and find best means of local transportation?

"I am staying here with my family from 21-28 December this year. We are visiting from Australia.  How can you get to the ski areas near the town? Do we need a car? Are there restaurants open on Christmas Day also?" (posted 04/18/2014)

From Schliersee, there is a bus to the skiing area Spitzingsee. The apartment owner you rent from will give you a tourist card with which you can use the bus for free. Another skiing area is the Sudelfeld in Bayrischzell, better reached by car (some 15 km). If you buy a ski pass for multiple days, you can use it in both skiing areas. Further info at www.alpenplus.com On Dec. 24, lots of restaurants are closed, but some will be open. We recommend making a reservation; that is probably best done when on location.

"What do we need to know if we wish to travel into Austria from Schliersee?" (posted 05/25/2014)

If you travel to Austria and use the motorway (Autobahn), you will need a "Vignette" (toll fee placard). That is very important because the penalty is very high!
Answer provided by Rene Baart on 05/25/2014
This answer is helpful
It’s enough for you to carry your passport (for checks). If you use the autobahn, you will need to get a “Vignette” (toll fee placard). Those can be purchased after arrival. That’s all you need, except for a route description, perhaps.

"How to reach Schliersee from Munich airport or railway station?" (posted 06/06/2014)

München Ost avoidance drive towards Salzburg, then the A8 until exit wooden churches. Always straight ahead, then you can not miss Schliersee. From the airport, ride a train direction Munich Central Station, then change in the direction of Schliersee in the Bavarian Oberland Bahn. "Hello! My husband and I are visiting Schliersee for 3 days in late June. Do you recommend renting a car, or is it easy to get to and around Schliersee using public transportation? We are arriving from Munich and heading onto Salzburg after our stay in Schliersee. Because we are picking up the car in Germany and dropping it off in Austria, the car rental will be very expensive and we are thinking of taking the train instead. However, we don't want to miss out on the best way to see Bavaria and Schliersee by not renting a car. Please share you candid advice, as this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us and we want to do it right! If you recommend to rent car, we'll go for it. Vielen dank!" (posted 06/10/2014)

Schliersee is easy to reach by train. The Bayerische Oberland Bahn (BOB) travels from Munich Central Station to Schliersee in about 1 hour (from the airport to Schliersee with change about 2 hours to Schliersee). By car you need from the airport to Schliersee about 1 hour. In company Sixt you can rent a car at Munich airport and return in Salzburg - the price in addition to the rental fee is 149, - €. You can call them and ask in English 0049 180 6 252,525th If you can visit Schliersee car look much more. I would rent the car in Munich and there deliver after 3 days again and then take the train to Salzburg. Regards - René Sea Garden House - we would be pleased if they visit us.

If they want to Austria and Switzerland, it certainly makes sense to rent a car. This works with the car better than the train. But note in the neighboring countries is always to buy a sticker for the highway use - very important!

Yes, the train goes from Munich Central Station to Schliersee. The train is called "BOB" (Bayerische Oberland Bahn). The trip takes about an hour. The following information I found on the internet: Date: 11/06/2016 10: 00h - 17: 00h (11.03.2013 - 11.06.2016) With the Leonhardifahrt from Schliersee to Neuhaus also the season outdoor museum ends in Mark Wasmund with a big party. This all can celebrate, the admission for all visitors is free of charge. The weather is hard to predict, but it should normally not give too much snow, because it is the beginning of November, if at all. The streets should generally not pose a threat. Except there was a snowstorm, which is unlikely.

Schliersee, a small climatic health resort town on a lake of the same name, is beautifully nestled in the pristine mountain scenery of the Bavarian Alps. In any season, Schliersee in the district of Miesbach, is a popular international holiday destination near to Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide), which is only an hour's drive away.

Schliersee is situated between Tegernsee (Tegernsee vacation rentals | Tegernsee travel guide) and the Inn Valley, about 31 miles southeast of Munich, near the Austrian border. It lies at an altitude of 2,555 ft. on the shore of one of the most beautiful and clean bathing lakes. The excellent quality of the water in the Schliersee is due in large part to the construction of a system for purifying waste water from the area surrounding the lake. Already since the early 19th century, Schliersee built its reputation as an idyllic holiday destination. Nowadays Schliersee, together with the districts of Neuhaus, Fischhausen and Spitzingsee is among the most popular holiday regions in Bavaria. Hiking, mountain biking and water sports are all time favorites and comes winter, more then 15 miles of groomed ski runs, 7 cross-country trails and many natural toboggan runs turn Schliersee into a snow white paradise.

Things to See in Schliersee

In the Schlierseer Heritage Museum, home in one of the oldest houses in the village built around 1500; farm work and life of the last 500 years are lovingly displayed. Besides the living and sleeping rooms in the museum, you can also view the judge and prison rooms. The collection includes furniture and utensils and a collection of Schlierseer glass products. Another great museum not to be missed is the Markus Wasmeier Farm and Ski Museum on the south bank of the Schliersee. The museum displays farm life at the beginning of the 18th century. Old farms in the Bavarian Oberland were dismantled at the original site, restored and rebuilt on the museums site.

On the Vineyard Hill stands the Gothic chapel of St. George from the 14th century, featuring a baroque altar from 1624. From the vineyard one also has a beautiful view of the town and the lake. At the northern entrance to the village is the baroque church of St. Martin with the Jenner Wine Grave. Finally, located in the center of town you will discover the St Sixtus church with a Holy Trinity group by Erasmus Grasser and ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The Schlierseer Farmer's Theater, founded in 1892, is the oldest theater of its kind in Bavaria, and with regular performances still going strong.

Why stay in Schliersee

In Schliersee, far away from big cities and the daily grind, holiday makers find the best ways for recreation and enjoy the beautiful nature. Extensive sports and leisure facilities, offered in both summer and winter, attract additional visitors to this region in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. The typical Bavarian charming village invites you to take a leisurely stroll, and enjoy the cafes and restaurants serving excellent local dishes. Schliersee is situated on the northeastern shore of the lake, offering picturesque views of the mountains, including the house-mountain Rotwand and the Wendelstein. Take a cable car and after a scenic drive you find yourself high in the mountains. Follow a trail leading you to mountain pastures with panoramic views and great food, and maybe use a toboggan run to return to the foot of the mountain. Go on a leisure boat tour, visit neighboring towns and sightseeing spots or pamper yourself in a spa.

Bavarian traditions are alive in Schliersee and happily shared with all guests. On top of the Folklore Evenings many sportive events and festivals are held throughout the year. In June it's about sport, when the Schliersee Alpine Triathlon is held. This is a German championship event and includes the Olympic distances of 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running. One of the most beautiful and colorful festivals in the Bavarian Oberland is held in August each year, in honor of the churches patron St. Sixtus. On this day fisherman come with their beautiful decorated wooden boats to the south bank of the Schliersee. Expect brass bands, colorful costumes and Bavarian Gemütlichkeit. Another event drawing visitors from near and far is the St. Leonhard Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after All Saints' Day in November. Approximately 80 festively decorated carriages drawn by 4 horses, and filled with people in historical costumes, arrive to take part in the Pilgrimage day's celebration, which include a mess, held in the open. And then it's time again for the Advent season, when the townscape offers a fairy-tale backdrop to the numerous festive events and performances. Schliersee is worth a long vacation and rightfully earned its reputation as a popular recreational area in Bavaria and Germany.
