More about the History of Schongau

The city Schongau lies near the former Roman road to Augsburg (Augsburg vacation rentals | Augsburg travel guide), the Via Claudia Augusta (47 AD), and thus owes its origins to the Romans. In the Middle Ages, it was an important hub and an important trading center on the transport line Verona-Augsburg-Nuremberg and salt on the road from Berchtesgaden (Berchtesgaden vacation rentals | Berchtesgaden travel guide) in the Allgäu. Through trade and industriousness, the citizens enjoyed an economic boom, causing a relocation of major trade routes. Due to the Bavarian district reform in 1972 this merged with the county to the present Weilheim district Weilheim-Schongau.
