Senftenberg Overview

Senftenberg is a town in southern Brandenburg, Germany, capital of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district. It is situated on the river Schwarze Elster and the Senftenberger Lake, approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Hoyerswerda, and 35 kilometres (22 mi) southwest of Cottbus (Cottbus vacation rentals | Cottbus travel guide). Senftenberg was mentioned the first time in 1279.

It is county town of County Upper Lusatia-Spreewald, and is located on the Black Elster and on Senftenberger lake, which is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. The fortification of the castle is the main starting point of urban development. From a document of the year 1279 comes the first documented mention of Senftenberg. Initially the settlement was around 300 to 400 residents. The settlers lived on arable, fruit and wine, and artisanal production. About 1860 was the black gold - the brown coal - found. A rapid industrialization and economic recovery were particularly characteristic of this time.

Things to See in Senftenberg

With an area of approximately 1,300 hectares and a good quality, the Senftenberger lake is a popular holiday and tourist destination for holidaymakers and water sports enthusiasts. On the lake runs the motor vessel Santa Barbara. On the south shore of Lake Senftenberger was on 31 March 2001, a 31.5-meter-high observation tower slate in the district Hosena, directly on Seeradweg between large and Kosche Niemtsch established.

The Senftenberger Theater New Stage Senftenberg was founded on October 21, 1946 than Stadttheater Senftenberg in the gymnasium of the school Walther Rathenau in command of the first district and municipal commanders of the Supreme Soviet Guard Ivan Demjanowitsch Soldatow founded.

In the building of the castle Senftenberger is the district museum. The exhibition examines the basis of finds and exhibits the lives of people in the Bronze Age in the Middle Ages through to find the brown and the incipient industrialization.

In Ortsteil large Kosche is the museum, a typical Senftenberger Vierseitenhof from 1864. The farmstead is a historical monument and is one of the last and also very well-preserved farmhouses of the region.

From urban planning perspective, the Gartenstadt Marga in the district Brieske of particular importance. Margarita Factory is a settlement with Gartenstadt character, because of the appearance in competition at Dresdner District Hellerau as first German Gartenstadt designated.

More about the History of Senftenberg

Senftenberg, in the wake of the German Ostsiedlung founded. The settlement Senftenberg evolved in the shelter of a castle (now the castle of the fortress), the German knights built. The town was west of the castle was planned and created. In 1928 the council took the decision to the 1717 Town Hall by a new building to expand. In September 1928, Knopf, the tower with a diameter of 35 centimeters up. On 1 January 1929, the building was inaugurated.
