Sonthofen Overview

Sonthofen is located approximately 70 kilometers from Lake Constance, and 150 kilometers from Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) and is the most southern town in Germany. The Grünten is the home mountain of Sonthofen. Sonthofen was given town rights on 18 August 1963. Sonthofen has 21,303 inhabitants (as of 31 March 2004). It is widely known for its milk and cheese products and as a tourist destination.

I am german and lived there till i was 32 and an american swept me away...my brothers and parent use to go to Sonthofen, we were with a skiclub and we had a little cottage in the mountain, use to walk up to it for over an hour, the view was breathtaking....Widderstein, Hoher ifen...i miss it.

More about the History of Sonthofen

The "Ordensburg" was not destroyed in the war and from 1946 to 1948 it was home to the United States Constabulary school. Nowadays it is used by the German Bundeswehr for the Bundeswehr's Military Police (Feldjäger) and Staff Service School. The German Army's NBC Defence School (ABC-Abwehr- und Selbstschutzschule) is also located in another barracks in Sonthofen. On 18 August 1963 Sonthofen was conferred as a city.
