Ulmen Overview

The name of the town derives from the German word for the Elm tree. Several crater lakes, known as Maars, are nearby, the Ulmener Maar and the Jungfernweiher. The Ulmener Maar is the youngest of the volcanic lakes of the Eifel region and provides the water supply for Ulmen. In Ulmen, one can find the ruins of an eleventh century castle.

More about the History of Ulmen

Many old buildings still bear witness to the historical past of Ulmen. In the 19th Century, Napoleon confiscated Prussian building in the property and and used Cochem (Cochem vacation rentals | Cochem travel guide) Castle as a quarry. When Ulmen almost completely burned down in 1831, the houses were built with the stones of the castle again.

In December 1970 the town was renamed to Ulmen

Ulmen is a municipality in western Germany. It is part of the district Cochem-Zell, and the state Rhineland-Palatinate. It is situated in the southern Eifel, approx. 15 km north-east of Cochem. Ulmen is the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") Ulmen.
