The Roman Forum of Lahnau-Waldgirmes (German: Das Römische Forum Lahnau-Waldgirmes) is a fortified Roman trading place, located at the edge of the modern village Waldgirmes, part of Lahnau on the Lahn, Hesse, Germany. The site has the oldest known stone buildings in Magna Germania.
The archaeological evidence at Waldgirmes suggests the remains of one of a series of planned towns and market places founded by the Romans east of the Rhine and north of the Danube, with the aim of long-term growth into population centres. The complex was never completed. In the absence of any historical reference or local inscriptions, the original name of the site remains unknown.

More about the History of Waldgirmes
In June 2003 there were 3,393 people living in Waldgirmes, which is over 1,200 years old and, therefore, has quite some history. Waldgirmes was first mentioned on 17 June 771 in the Codex Laurishamensis, page 187, paragraph 5 (15th calendar of July in the 3rd year of the Government of King Charles). In a Hubenregister
(directory of goods) of the monastery Lorsch (Lorsch vacation rentals | Lorsch travel guide) the full name Waldgermize
was mentioned. Between 780 and 802 a donation had been made to the Monastery of Fulda (Fulda vacation rentals | Fulda travel guide).
In the year 1104 the Count Otto von Gleiberg inherited the western half of the county Gleiberg to which Waldgirmes belonged. In 1129 or 1141 Otto married the daughter of the Count of Solms (Solms vacation rentals | Solms travel guide). His dominion he brought into the Solmser possessions and called himself Count Otto von Solms.
In 1255 the county Solms was split amongst the brothers Heinrich and Marquard. Marquard, who already in 1240 had his own residence built in Königsberg (Königsberg vacation rentals | Königsberg travel guide) would refer to himself from now on as the Count of Solms-Königsberg. Waldgirmes belonged to his reign. Count Philip, the last male member of this dynasty, sold in 1350 his possessions to the Count Heinrich Il., the Iron of Hesse
. Only until 1629/1631, almost 300 years later, this division contract had been approved by the emperor. In the three centuries before, the people living in Waldgirmes had to tithe to two rulers.
In more recent history (1997-1998) some archeologists discovered traces which go back to the time of the Roman Empire. The picture above shows a model of the Roman forum Lahnau-Waldgirmes, which was over 2200 square meters large. A good historical overview can be found on Waldgirmes' official homepage.
There are many historical buildings in the center of the village, along with a local Heimatmuseum
. Although the village is small, it has a lot to offer. You can get many things done locally without having to drive a lot.
