The Zinnowitz, founded about 700 years ago, is one a favorite holiday resort in northern Germany, founded shortly before the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Vermillion lies between the Baltic Sea and backwaters (a small inland sea), one of the narrowest points of the island of Usedom. The place is surrounded by beech, oak and pine forest, and has a very nice, wide, sandy beach. In addition to the perhaps most beautiful promenade in the Baltic Sea and the beautiful historic seaside architecture Zinnowitz offers many cultural attractions: the Theater "The Tin", the September annual June "Vineta Festival", exhibitions and concert listings. There are opportunities for tennis, golf, sailing and horse riding, the "Amber Spa" (Spa) and a diving gondola at the pier. Recommended are: - cycling along the coast of Usedom - steam out or sailing in the Baltic Sea or the backwater (inland sea) - Tour of the Historical and Technical Museum Peenemünde (construction and launch of the first long-range rocket in the world by Wernher von Braun, who later became the Apollo Program NASA initiated) and of the U-Boat Museum Peenemünde - visiting other resorts (Heringsdorf, Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck) - Hiking on the backwaters - Tour of the water castle Mellenthin - trips to the island Greifswald Oie, or complaints (by boat) - trips to Greifswald or Stralsund (both major Hanseatic cities)

Travel Insider Tips for Zinnowitz

Zinnowitz Overview

Zinnowitz is an elegant seaside resort town on the island of Usedom (Usedom vacation rentals | Usedom travel guide) on the Baltic Sea, in the northern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Here you can sunbathe, swim, surf, sail, hike, bicycle—even go horseback riding. Usedom has 40 kilometers of beach, and Zinnowitz holds the record as the sunniest town in Germany!

The Isle of Usedom is one of Germany's major holiday and recreation areas due to its beaches, its natural beauty and a number of elegant seaside towns such as Zinnowitz and Heringsdorf, which have been frequented by the German and international nobility as well as the general public. Many hotels and bed and breakfast establishments are available on both sides of the German-Polish border. In addition to the coastline, the hinterland features nature reserves, castles, lakes and historic villages.

Besides the fascinating landscape, the visitor will experience a wealth of species of animals and plants that are only rarely found in Europe. Additionally, historic destinations, such as the salt Koserow cottages, the Dutch Mill in the Benz or art in hand Werkhof Mölschow are interesting tourist attractions of the island.

More about the History of Zinnowitz

Zinnowitz is first mentioned, named as Tzys, in 1309 in a deed of donation by the duke Bogus?aw IV to the Crumminer monastery. When the monastery was dissolved in 1563, Tzys reverted to the possession of the duke. At the end of the Thirty Years' War, in 1648, Usedom, with Pomerania, fell to Sweden, which changed its name to the old Wendish form of Tzys, spelt as Zitz. In the middle of the 18th century Zitz fell into Prussian hands. In 1751 in the course of the reorganization of the royal domain, Zinnowitz was renamed. When the Prussian state fell into financial need because of the Seven Years' War, it sold Zinnowitz to a businessnessman, the Kommerzienrat F. W. Krause, who sold it to 32 groups of colonists. The next big step for Zinnowitz was on 16 June 1851: Zinnowitz was allowed an official spa enterprise.

It has a rail connection to Wolgast and Ahlbeck. In GDR times Zinnowitz was the most important bathing resort for Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund tourism. It may be that here was the former town of Vineta which is mentioned in old records.

In the forest between Zinnowitz and Zempin there are still some remnants of the launching pads for testing the V1 missile. They were used between 1943 and 1945: see also Peenemünde.
