A Taste of Mexico in Berlin

“It’s really authentic, simple Mexican grub,” said Ramsés Manneck, the 25 year-old Mexico City native who runs Maria Bonita (Danziger Strasse 33; 49-176-7017-9461) with Julian Boyce, also 25, who hails from Australia. “We wanted to introduce unknown dishes from Mexican cuisine into the German palate.”
Berlin has never offered much in the way of authentic Mexican food. Indeed, as of a couple of years ago, Viva Mexico (Chausseestrasse 36; no phone), a cozy hole in the wall in Mitte, may have held the distinction of being the city’s only Mexican restaurant actually run by a Mexican cook. But things are changing: In the past nine months, no fewer than five authentic Mexican restaurants serving quality fare have opened in Berlin. “There’s a boom,” said Daniel Tamayo Astie, the Mexican Embassy’s cultural attaché, “both in Mexican restaurants in Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide), and Mexican gastronomy in Germany.”
The newcomers are all squarely in the budget category, with hearty meals to be had for 10 euros, about $12.50, or less. Maria Bonita proved so popular that by January, Mr. Manneck and Mr. Boyce opened a second, much larger restaurant, Maria Peligro (Skalitzer Strasse 81) in Kreuzberg (Kreuzberg vacation rentals | Kreuzberg travel guide). A Mexican cantina with a Berlin twist, Peligro has D.J.’s, hand-me-down couches and a dining room dominated by a masked portrait of Blue Demon, a Mexican wrestler. Tequila and mezcal drinks complement a rotating menu of spicy tacos and enchiladas. Last month, the duo opened their third restaurant, the cool, cozy Santa Maria (Oranienstrasse 170), also in Kreuzberg. Here, the focus is on Mexico City street food classics like chilaquiles, tortas and tacos. “We’re young and stupid,” Mr. Manneck said. “As long as we still have energy and ideas, we’ll keep going.”
