Glittering, magical cities attract visitors around Christmas time more than at perhaps any other time of year, whether one is talking about New York, London, or Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide). There is something especially enchanting about the urban streets, bustling with shoppers and the endless array of Christmas lights and decorations. Germany's capital is an intriguing city any time of year, but with its dozens of Christmas markets, Berlin offers something for literally everyone. Christmas markets can be found in many neighborhoods around the larger urban area, including Friedrichshain, Moabit, Wilmersdorf, Marienfelde, Altglienicke (Altglienicke vacation rentals | Altglienicke travel guide), Alt-Buckow, Frohnau, and Charlottenburg. All of the Christmas markets in Berlin offer a little something different, and a few deserve to be mentioned specifically.

WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt - This market attracts about 600,000 visitors each year and features over 150 exhibitors. Of special interest are the international artisans and handworkers that are involved with this particular market. Origami masters, leather workers, hat makers, and wood workers from Oberammergau (Oberammergau vacation rentals | Oberammergau travel guide) are only a small selection of those who sell at the Gendarmenmarkt. The tents here are festively decorated with 1,000 meters of lighted chains, 1,000 Christmas balls, and 120 lighted Moravian stars. The market's Christmas tree is a gift from the city of Oranienburg (Oranienburg vacation rentals | Oranienburg travel guide) and is ornamented with 5,000 lights.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Opernpalais - This Berlin Christmas market features a 100-year- old Ferris Wheel, sure to delight children and others. Sellers from the Erzgebirge, the Czech Republic, and the south Tyrol offer an array of traditional European goods. Every day at 4 pm, Christmas concerts are hosted at the market's stage.

Umwelt- und Weihnachtsmarkt in Berlin-Mitte (Berlin-Mitte vacation rentals | Berlin-Mitte travel guide) - What makes this Christmas market in Berlin unique is its focus on the worldwide environmental movement. Prominent environmental groups, such as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Federation, present their projects here to interested visitors. Sellers feature eco-friendly gifts and wares. Vegetarian and organic foods are offered for sale. The cups that can be purchased at the Glueweinstaender are also part of the environmental focus of this Christmas market. A share of the sales of these cups supports a tree planting project in Kathmandu. Lastly year, 10,000 trees were planted in Nepal as a result of the monies raised at this Christmas market alone.

Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt in Kulturbrauerei - This Christmas market is named for Santa Lucia, the light-bringing saint honored in Sweden. As one might guess, this market has a decidedly Scandanavian flair, with music, handcrafts and foods from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark. A bungee trampoline and an old-fashioned chain carousel provides cheerful diversions to the shopping duties. Every evening at 8 pm, a stilt walker performer entertains visitors at the Lucia market.
