Deutsches Museum – Masterpieces of Science and Technology

With about 28,000 exhibited objects from 50 fields of science and technology, the Deutsche Museum in Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) is the largest museum in its field worldwide. The museum actually posses over 100,000 objects from a vast range of subjects — spanning from mining to atom physics, from the Altamira cave to a magnified model of a human cell, from the Stone Age to the present time. Almost 1,5 million people visit this spectacular museum per year to admire the wonders of present and past technology.
The grand building of the Deutsche Museum is located on a small island in the heart of Bavaria’s capital Munich and has been open to the public since 1925. However, the idea to a German museum celebrating the achievements of science and technology was already developed during a meeting of the Association of German Engineers in 1903.
The various exhibitions in the Deutsche Museum are constantly changing and range from science over materials and production, energy and transport to the field of modern communication and information. The whole museum is filled up to the roof with astonishing masterpieces. Still, some of the most noteworthy highlights include the first motorized aircraft built by the Wright brothers, the U1 submarine, the first program—controlled computer (Conrad Zuse’s Z3) and Diesel’s original engine.
In addition to the main museum in Munich, the Deutsche Museum has two branches. One is the Flugwerft Schleißheim
about 30 miles outside the city, which is dedicated to aviation. Many airplanes are on display here, including a Horten wings—only glider built in the 1940s as well as fighter planes used in the Vietnam War. The museum in Boon was opened in 1995 and focuses on German technology, science and research after 1945.
