Explore the Local History Museum in Aßlar

Many European countries are highly centralized. States like France, Austria or Denmark have their capital city plus maybe another bigger city, where the major part of its population lives, where the most money is made and, especially, where the cultural scene is located. Germany, on the other hand, in this regard is a bit more like the United States. Of course, there is Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide) as the political capital and current Mecca for national and international hipsters but additionally each of Germany’s 16 states has its various big cities, towns and villages that almost all are worth a visit. Germany is a very diverse country and a great destination for many tourists, no matter if they look for relaxation, adventure, cultural stimulation or pure fun. Even the smallest town has something that’s worth exploring. This is especially true for Aßlar.
Aßlar is a very young city with a population of about 13,000 in Hesse. Under municipal reforms, several villages and communities in the Lahn—Dill district were united and the town of Aßlar created in 1977. On paper Aßlar is only a bit more than 30 years old, but actually parts of today’s town were already mentioned in more than one—thousand—year—old documents.
The oldest part of Aßlar is Werdorf (Werdorf vacation rentals | Werdorf travel guide), which was first mentioned in 772. The pride of Werdorf is Werdorf Castle, which was built between 1680 and 1700 in Baroque style. The castle was built by the Solms-Greifenstein dynasty and used as a summer residence for decades. Since the end of the 19th century Werdorf Castle has served as school for a long time and today it houses a museum of local history.
The permanent exhibitions located in the museum are divided into three topics. First, there is the history of the castle itself, then the history of trades in the area, and finally the history of industrial development in the Lahn—Dill district. Additionally there is the so—called princes room, which can be booked for weddings. All the rooms were reconstructed to look exactly how they did back in the beginning of the 18th century. Walking through this castle — exploring the kitchen, the various workshops, the children’s play room and many other things — lets you get a true feeling of how life in those times was like.
Unfortunately the museum is not open to the general public on a daily basis but if you contact the administration office at heimatverein-werdorf@t-online.de, they will be happy to book a private guided tour for you.
