THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF 20ELEVEN! is the official slogan of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011, which takes place in Germany from the 26th of June until the 17th of July. According to FIFA President Steffi Jones this slogan “encapsulates the emotional impact of the game, the specific aesthetics and dynamism of women's football, and the unique atmosphere of a World Cup”. In short, it stands for emotion, action and fun and many tough and talented women excelling at a much beloved sport.
The Women’s World Cup has only taken place five times so far. The German team has appeared in all the finals and won the last two World Cups, in the USA 2003 and in China 2007. Last time they even retained the trophy without losing a single match. So, it is only fair that this year’s tournament will finally take place in the current world champignons’ home country. 23 cities applied to host games, in the end the following nine cities were chosen: Augsburg (Augsburg vacation rentals | Augsburg travel guide), Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide), Bochum (Bochum vacation rentals | Bochum travel guide), Dresden (Dresden vacation rentals | Dresden travel guide), Frankfurt (Frankfurt vacation rentals | Frankfurt travel guide) am Main, Leverkusen (Leverkusen vacation rentals | Leverkusen travel guide), Mönchengladbach (Mönchengladbach vacation rentals | Mönchengladbach travel guide), Sinsheim (Sinsheim vacation rentals | Sinsheim travel guide) and Wolfsburg (Wolfsburg vacation rentals | Wolfsburg travel guide). The first game will stage at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and the finale will take place in Frankfurt am Main.
Like always, 16 teams take part in the World Cup and there will be a total of 32 matches in the course of the tournament. Traditionally men’s football has not only been Germany’s favorite sport but also the most popular sport worldwide. National tournaments, the European Championship and especially the World Cup have attracted vast audiences and created endless media coverage. At the same time women’s football was basically ignored for a long time. Luckily, the increasing quality of the various international female teams, their elegant, dynamic and yet technically adapt style have helped to get women’s football out off its niche.
This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup will be an amazing global event with millions of fans cheering in front of their own TVs, at public viewings and, of course, at the nine German stadiums.
