Federal Horticultural Show 2011

The spring and summer of 2011 will be a magical time in Koblenz. From the 15th of April until the 16th of October the Federal Horticultural Show takes place in this picturesque town between the rivers Rhine and Moselle. This 2000 years old town lies in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in the West of Germany, which was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO committee in 2002. Koblenz (Koblenz vacation rentals | Koblenz travel guide), situated in a valley right at the waterfront and surrounded by soft hills, endless forests and meadows, reminds its visitors of the Mediterranean and has always attracted people from all over the world. It already is a stunning city but the designers and landscape architects that work for the Federal Horticultural Show have risen to the occasion and managed to even increase the beauty of Koblenz.

The show comprises three areas left and right of the Rhine, where permanent exhibitions are situated and special events take place during the next months. The different areas are connected by cable cars, which drive you back and forth across the river. These exhibition sites around the Electoral Palace, the Ehrenbreitstein fortress and in the Blumenhof courtyard cover a total of 48 hectares. It is a magical experience to wander around these breathtaking gardens and smell the scent of thousands of flowers.

The Electoral Palace has been renovated specially for the Federal Horticultural Show and will be open to the public again for the first time in years. The terraced garden behind the building has been recreated according to the original plans of the Prussian landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. Walking through these magnificent grounds gives you the feeling of stepping back in time and will be a great backdrop for various special events that take place there during the spring and summer.

The largest core area is the Ehrenbreitstein fortress, which is located on a plateau that offers a breathtaking view over the rivers Rhine and Moselle and the whole town of Koblenz. This is also the most mystical and adventurous site of the three, due to its many covered passageways, forest areas and romantic woodland glades. Especially children will love the imaginatively designed play space including a natural adventure climbing area situated there.

Finally, the Blumenhof courtyard is designed as a place of peace and quiet. Visitors can come here to sit in the sun, enjoy a glass of wine, listen to street artists playing classical music and just marvel at the magnificent flower arrangements around them. The designers’ idea for the Blumenhof courtyard was to create a paradise garden filled with plants from biblical mythology, that invites you to relax and contemplate.
