Gemünden – A Romantic Town in the Westerwald

If you are in need of a quiet and secluded place to wind down and relax for a couple of days, Gemünden (Gemünden vacation rentals | Gemünden travel guide) is an ideal holiday destination for you. A Romantic poet could not have imagined the location and appearance of this lovely small town in the West of Germany any better. Gemünden in the Westerwald lies in a valley surrounded by impressive mountains in the North and East and is wide open towards the South. In the town itself three rivers — the Holzbach, Elbbach and Schafbach — flow together. The protection of the mountains and forests around and the sparse population of only a few more than 1000 citizens, have very positive effects on the climate. The weather is surprisingly mild all year round and the air is uncommonly clean.
The Wiesensee, a beautiful lake, is only a bit more than one mile outside Gemünden. Here you can go fishing and swimming in the summer or just lie down in the warm grass on the shore and take a sunbath. There is also an 18—hole golf course right by the lake. Other popular sports in the area are hiking, biking and inline skating. A definite highlight of this area is the so—called Sonnenkanzel, which was opened in 2010. It is a platform from where you have a spectacular view over Gemünden and the whole Westerwald. It is especially lovely in the spring and summer, when you can hike up there on a sunny day and enjoy a picnic on the top.
The biggest and at the same time most significant building in Gemünden is the Protestant church St. Severus, which was built around 1100 AD and today still displays fragments of Romanesque paintings from this time period.
Being a remote small town, Gemünden’s cultural calendar is quite sparse. Nevertheless, every second weekend after Whitsun the whole town comes together to celebrate the kermis festival. Additionally, on the 30th of March every year there is a Dance into the May
party held in the local fire station.
As you can see, this town is not the right place for you, if you need a lot of action during your holiday. There is enough opportunity to do sports, but hardly any nightlife or cultural events going on. However, if you need a break from your hectic reality and live in a leisurely wonderland for a little while, come to Gemünden and spend the most romantic vacation of your life.
