The German Alpine Road covers 280 miles through the Alps between Lindau (Lindau vacation rentals | Lindau travel guide) on Lake Constance and Berchtesgaden (Berchtesgaden vacation rentals | Berchtesgaden travel guide) on Lake Königssee and all along the German—Austrian border. Every mile, a smile is commonly used as a slogan for this popular tourist route and sums it up perfectly. Driving, hiking or cycling along this amazing route will truly make you feel like you entered the Bavarian fairy tale world of your dreams.

The German Alpine Road through the Allgäu and Bavarian Alps offers a great variety. It twists its way along more than 20 sparkling lakes, green meadows, deep forests, gentle hills, blooming valleys and steep mountains. The most impressive one of those mountains is the Zugspitze at almost 10,000 feet above sea level. Furthermore, you will pass as many as 25 ancient castles and abbeys and enter dozens of romantic little villages. A certain highlight or this tour is Neuschwanstein Castle — the epitome of a romantic fairy tale castle, built by legendary Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century.

The Allgäu is a region of Bavaria where traditions and customs, that are often hundreds of years old, are still very much alive. Most of the villages you visit mainly live of farming. Only in this area of the country a lot of men and women still wear Lederhosen and Dirndls, the traditional Bavarian costume, not only for special events but on a daily basis. You will come by some country fairs and farmer’s markets, where brass music bands and the even more special zither ensembles play, and in every beer garden you are greeted with home—made Bavarian specialties, like veal shanks and dumplings, and of course the infamous Mass — one whole liter of refreshing beer from the tap.

In addition to the breathtaking panorama, the amazing food and the lovely people, there is even more to the German Alpine Road: it is a paradise for sports fans. There is a well—marked cycle path all along the route, you can swim in the crystal—clear lakes during the summer months and in winter you can ski or snowboard on the many ski slopes of varying difficulty levels along the route. More adventurous tourists can even try out wild water rafting, paragliding or take in the stunning scenery from even higher up, in an air balloon.

Going on a tour along the German Alpine Road is an amazing adventure for everybody and a vacation you and your family will never forget.
