The Jewish Museum Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide) takes its visitors on a journey through two millennia of German—Jewish history. Various permanent and special exhibitions provide insight in Jewish life and the difficult relationships between Jews and Non—Jews — especially Germans — throughout the centuries.
The symbiosis of old and new, Judaism and Germandom is symbolized in the two buildings the museum consists of. The old part is the Kollegienhaus, a former courthouse, which was built in 1735 and is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The new addition, a spectacular construction made of glass and steel, was designed by the world—renowned architect Daniel Libeskind and opened to the public in 2001. The whole museum consists of about 161,000 square feet and is one of the most popular museums in Berlin that attracts over half a million visitors per year.
The Jewish Museum showcases many permanent exhibitions, which focus on the beginnings of Judaism as well as Jewish history and of course the Holocaust. Parts of these exhibitions are interactive, the most nightmarish being the Holocaust Tower, a high, dark and cold room, only slightly lit by daylight coming through a cleft in the ceiling. This memorial place symbolizes the fear and suffering Jews during the Nazi regime. Another interesting part of the museum is the Rafael Roth Learning Center, filled with more than 20 computer stations for individuals and groups where you can learn about German—Jewish history and culture in particular and find out more about famous present and past German Jews.
