Lake Königssee

Visit the deepest lake in Germany (190 meters deep). It is also the third highest lake in Germany at 603 meters up ((the Taubensee, a small lake near the German/Austrian border is higher with 1,138 meters, also the Titisee with 845 meter). Lake Königssee is located in the extreme southeast of Bavaria and is surrounded by the picturesque Bavarian Alps. Its crystal clear emerald-green waters are full of innumerable fish and its surface mirrors the Watzmann massifs rocky flanks.

The lake is kept so clean because as early as 1909 environmental precautions were taken and since then only electric boats, rowboats and pedal boats are allowed to cruise on the lake. The lake has always been known for its clear waters and strikingly beautiful scenery. It is known to be the cleanest lake in Germany.

Königssee's landmark, the red, onion domed chapel of St. Bartholomä, can only be reached by boat. This world-famous church, originally dating back to the 12th century, lies at the tip of a picturesque peninsula. Neighboring the chapel stands the former hunting lodge of Berchtesgaden's provosts and Bavaria's kings, today an idyllic location for an inn.

Electric boat tours operate year-round to the chapel that sits on the western shore of the lake. Because of the lake´s geographical positioning, the mountains create a magnificent echo. The captain of the boat will stop at Echo Wall and play the trumpet (or Flügelhorn in German) to demonstrate the clarity of the echos which bounces back to the boat seven times.
