Museum und Park Kalkriese – Visit the site of the Varus Battle

In Museum und Park Kalkriese history comes to life. Exactly 2000 years ago the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest — the so—called Varus Battle — took place there, when German tribes ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. Today there is a modern museum and information center close to this historic site, where archeology and history fans can find out everything there is to know about one of the fiercest battles of the ancient world.
Already in 1987 the British soldier and amateur archaeologist Major Anthony Clunn decided to systematically search the area of Barenaue in order to find anything, which would indicate an ancient battlefield. Indeed, within only a couple of months he and his helpers found many bronze coins, fragments of arms and military equipment as well as eight pits containing human bones and skeletons of mules to prove that the Varus Battle had actually taken place there. In 1990 intersted locals decided to make the historic place and the excavations accessible to the public and opened an information center close to the site. In 2000 an archaeological park was set up and finally, in 2002 a museum was opened. In there the written records of the Varus Battle are presented and the leading and misleading tracks of archaeological and scientific research related to the finds are elucidated.
2009 marks the 2000th anniversary of the Varus Battle. In celebration of this anniversary a new visitors center was opened, which houses facilities for workshops, conferences and events as well as a well—assorted museum shop, including a comprehensive literature range. In additon to the permanent exhibition about the Vaurs Battle, there are various special exhbitions and special events held at Museum und Park Kalkriese this year.
