The yearly Richard Wagner Festival is the highlight of the festival season in Germany and attracts visitors from all over the world, including celebrities and top politicians.
In July and August devotees of Richard Wagner's music flock to Bayreuth (Bayreuth vacation rentals | Bayreuth travel guide) in Upper Franconia to join in the celebrations for this sensational festival, which was conceived by the world-famous composer himself. , are presented every year. Featuring performers of the highest caliber, the productions attract music—lovers from all over the globe and offer outstanding cultural entertainment. The superlative acoustics in the theatre lend the festival an extra—special atmosphere.
In the early 1850s Richard Wagner formed the theory of a Gesamtkunstwerk
, meaning a performance that combines all arts, including performance arts, literature and visual arts. For Wagner this meant that he did not only care about composing wonderful music but wanted to exert his artistic influence on the plot of his operas and even on the stage scenery. This theory lead to Wagner’s idea of building his own theatre in order to hold a festival under his direction there. Wagner’s plans are first mentioned in a letter to a friend in 1850 but he had to wait until 1876 before he could open the gates to the Festspielhaus to his visitors for the first time.
Today the Bayreuth festival is still run by the Wagner family and more popular than ever. Just the whole spectacle in Bayreuth and on the festival premises is worth a visit but if you actually want to see an opera, be quick! The official ticket sale for 2010 starts on the 16th October 2009 and if you try to order tickets for the first time, you actually have to apply in writing until end of September 2009.
