If you are looking for a relaxing and private getaway Berggasthaus-Herzogstand is exactly what you would want. Settled in the Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) Alps this discrete but formidable mountain is still a secret to the locals, so chances are you will have the first go at laying fresh tracks.

The Herzogstand mountain is 1,731meters high (5,167ft) and situated northwest of Lake Walchen and 75km south of Munich. Due to its vicinity to the city of Munich, the Herzogstand is considered to be its "house mountain" and used for recreational purposes by the its residents.

The mountain became famous in 1865 when Bavarian King Ludwig II had a royal lodge built 200 meters south of the summit peak. After his death in 1886 the house was given to the free state of Bavaria. It was then leased to the Alpen section of Munich in which it became a family run operation. In 1978 the Zauner family purchased the lodge for themselves; however after a fire in 1990, the lodge was rebuilt and is now used as a mountain inn and restaurant.

The mountain is accessible by cable car or a two-hour snowshoe and the hotel offers traditional Bavarian-styled rooms with gorgeous views of the alpine foothills. The groomed slope down to the valley is over 4km long but you can hike up an extra 200m to the summit and explore the fresh powder runs and chutes that have a skill-range of easy to advanced.
