The Roman Fort Saalburg

Did you ever wanted to see a Roman castle? The Saalburg is the most completely reconstructed roman fort in Germany. It was built by the romans as a so called cohort fort and belonged to the Limes Germanicus
- the Roman linear border fortification of the German provinces (the Saalburg is on the upper fortification line due to its location.) Located on the Taunus Ridge, northwest of Bad Homburg (Homburg vacation rentals | Homburg travel guide) in Hesse, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005.
Earliest examinations of the site were undertaken in the mit 1800 by the Nassau (Nassau vacation rentals | Nassau travel guide) Antiquarian Society. By the late 1890s the Reichs Limes Kommission (Imperial Commission for Roman borders) became more interested in provincial Roman archaeology and began researching the entire course of the Limes as well as all locations of its forts. It took decades for this extensive project and intensive exploration of the Saalburg surroundings by several archaeologists. The most famous two were the Jacobi's - father and son - who were ordered the reconstruction of the Saalburg in 1897 by Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Adjacent to the Saalburg fort is the Saalburg Museum, which concentrates entirely on the study of the German Limes.

By car: Basically go on A5, and then take the exit A 661 towards Bad Homburg. Then go onto A 456 towards Wehrheim. Follow the signs for Saalburg.
